Abstract

A central challenge in network resilience and smart-grid restoration is to compare studies whose mechanisms and validation settings do not share a single denominator. The present review uses targeted connectivity-link addition to strengthen multiplex-network resilience and a status-and-opportunity synthesis of smart-grid restoration methods as focal cases for a boundary-aware synthesis. A structured reading of two target studies and 11 verified companion references is conducted across five lenses: attack model, interlayer coupling, rewiring cost, robustness metrics, critical services. Emphasis is placed on the provenance of evidence, the comparability of baselines, and the consequences of alternative explanations. The combined literature indicates that methodological gains become actionable only when attack model and interlayer coupling are evaluated together and when limits associated with critical services are explicit. This shifts the emphasis from isolated scores toward traceable chains of evidence and decision relevance. The resulting framework supports reproducible comparison while preserving differences between study designs, and it identifies concrete points at which transfer claims should be narrowed or retested.
